Exploring Creative Careers
Pupils studying Art and Textiles at RGS Worcester gained an insight into the wide range of opportunities within the creative industries last Thursday, as Joshua Barnett from Falmouth University visited the School for a series of workshops, classroom sessions and a whole-school Careers Seminar.
Working with Year Eleven pupils and Sixth Form students across both Art and Textiles lessons, Joshua explored creative pathways beyond School, discussing degree-level study, portfolio preparation and the growing range of careers available within the sector. Pupils were encouraged to think broadly about where creative subjects can lead, from Fashion, Film and Photography to Architecture, Marketing, Media and Design.
The visit concluded with a Careers Seminar in the Lecture Theatre, open to pupils from across the School, where Joshua introduced Falmouth University’s specialist creative courses and shared insight into the scale and impact of the UK’s creative industries. Pupils heard how the sector contributes more than £140 billion annually to the UK economy and supports millions of jobs nationwide, while discussions throughout the day challenged outdated perceptions surrounding careers in the arts and creative fields.
Pupils also learned about Falmouth University’s distinctive approach to assessment, with courses centred around practical project work, portfolio development and industry-style collaboration rather than traditional examinations. Joshua also shared examples of graduate success, including alumni involved in designing Royal Mail stamps and branding for major film productions, helping pupils better understand the breadth of opportunities available within the creative sector.
The sessions provided pupils with an opportunity to engage directly with a creative Higher Education specialist, while encouraging them to think ambitiously about future opportunities within the creative industries and beyond.
