Principles we uphold

We want pupils to be fully engaged in their learning, to become active learners, and not to be content with the role of the recipient within the classroom. To this end, we blend innovative learning, such as the Digital Learning Programme, with the traditional practice of highly qualified and experienced teachers to create a stimulating and engaging learning environment. RGS has a long tradition of achieving outstanding examination results at A Level and at GCSE and also in attaining excellent value-added scores, calculated when pupils achieve final examination results.

Curriculum

We provide a wide, varied and balanced curriculum in the Lower School (Years Seven and Eight), and we work closely with our feeder schools to ensure we have continuity of development in these important foundation years at the Senior School.

In Year Nine, we provide a little more focus on the Core subjects (English, Mathematics, the Sciences and Modern Foreign Languages) whilst at the same time allowing pupils to maintain breadth with a choice, for example, of Creative Arts subjects, Latin and Classics or Computer Science. In the GCSE years (Ten and Eleven), we offer a more personalised curriculum.

Independent and lifelong learning

We foster a love of learning at RGS so that our students leave us with appropriate examination results, an educational experience of the widest opportunity and the skills and qualities necessary for further success in life. Each year, well over 80% of our students achieve their first choice university place.

The Sixth Form is a time of transition where a pupil in a class becomes a student of a subject. Ordinarily, students would choose to study four subjects in the Lower Sixth year and, after taking predominantly internal examinations in the Lower Sixth, they would choose to take three of those subjects on to the Upper Sixth Form for further study at A Level.
