RGS Golfers Show Determination in ISGA Season Opener
On Tuesday 6 October, RGS Worcester golfers began their season against Solihull School in the opening round of the Independent Schools Golf Association (ISGA) Matchplay competition at Worcester Golf and Country Club.
The RGS B Team faced Solihull’s A Team in a series of competitive matches. Will produced an impressive comeback, recovering from three down after four holes to secure a 5&4 victory. Ed faced Solihull’s top player and battled hard before narrowly losing 2&1, while Ciaran also put up a strong challenge, finishing 2&1 down. The team demonstrated excellent determination against opponents with considerably lower handicaps.
Meanwhile, the RGS A Team faced Solihull’s B Team, with Maisie securing a hard-fought 3&1 victory. Jacob pushed his opponent to the final hole before narrowly losing one down, leaving the overall result dependent on Max’s closely contested match.
After 18 holes, Max and his opponent remained level, forcing a sudden-death play-off. With supporters gathering to watch, Max produced a remarkable 220-yard shot from the trees on the first extra hole, clearing the water to reach the green. However, neither player could secure victory, and the match continued through a second extra hole before Solihull eventually claimed victory on the third, following an excellent approach shot from 200 yards.
Despite the results, the afternoon provided an excellent display of competitive Golf, with all RGS players demonstrating skill, resilience and sportsmanship throughout. Congratulations to everyone involved for their performances and for representing the School so well in the opening fixture of the season.
