Running Ahead in Athletics
The Athletics season at RGS Worcester has been in full swing during the Trinity term, seeing multiple competitions across the various ages here at the School.
The first competition of the year saw our Year Ten and Eleven pupils head to Nunnery Wood High Schools for the Under 16 District Championship, where they competed against the best from local schools here in Worcester. This competition saw Jacob Bunyan winning 800m, Dylan Teasdale winning 1500m, Sarah Dudley and Sophie Gebhardt winning 1st and 2nd respectively in 800m and Rowan Towers winning in the 200m event.
On 10 May Year Seven and Nine visited Bromsgrove School, to compete in the first round of the English Schools Track & Field Cup with teams achieving the following positions:
Junior Boys team placed 3rd with 269 points
Junior Girl team placed 4th with 250 points
Inter Boys team placed 5th with 144 points
Inter Girls team placed 5th with 151 points
Pupils from Year Eight and Nine travelled to the other side of the river to compete against King’s School. The weather held off on both days and saw some great performances from both years. Isla Goold ran an exceptional 800m race and narrowly missed the school’s 800m record! We also saw a fantastic long jump performance for Maxwell Moses jumping 5.25m.
Our Year Nine team took part in the Under 14 District Championships on 18 May at Nunnery Wood High School. There were some great individual performances as well as our Boys’ and Girls’ teams both winning their relays. RGS pupils Izzy Yarwood and Tallula Gregory took 1st and 2nd respectively in the 100m and Noah Dunnett also had a great run winning the 1500m.
Year Seven and Eight teams visited Stourport for a competition hosted by Abberley Hall School. Year 8 boys had a 300m race to themselves with Ed Taylor, Lucas Jones, Theo Houston and Mikhail Ashton battling it out! Javelin was a close competition with Daniel Kilby-Tyre and Maximillian Kilby taking 1st and 2nd position and there was a great run from Bill Wilesmith, winning his 1500m race.
Performances in both the Under 16 and Under 14 District Championships have meant that 18 pupils from RGS have qualified for the Hereford & Worcestershire County Schools Championship, taking place on 11 June at Stourport High School. Those that compete at this standard have the chance to represent the County team at the Masons Trophy and the English School Athletics Championships later this year.
In addition, pupils from Year Eight Look forward to the upcoming District Championships on 15 June, where we are expecting yet more excellent performances and hopefully some more qualifiers for the Under 13 County Championships on 29 June.
Well done to all who have participated in Athletics events so far this year and represented the School so well.
