RGS Worcester’s Sustainable Journey
RGS Worcester is embarking on a new initiative that aims to make our School an even more sustainable and environmentally conscious place. Each week our pupils and staff are taking on environmental challenges, making a positive impact on the world in which we live and each doing our bit for the environment. This sustainability journey begins with a focus on water bottles and coffee cups, two common items that often lead to unnecessary waste.
Week One – Water Bottles:
Did you know that in the UK alone, a staggering 7.7 billion plastic water bottles are used each year? On average, a person uses around 150 plastic water bottles annually. If just 10% of British people were to refill a bottle once per week, it could save a remarkable 340 million bottles from being discarded.
However, the reality is less optimistic. Currently, the recycling rate for plastic packaging in the UK is under 50%, and many bottles still end up as plastic pollution, even if people intend to recycle them. The solution is simpler than you might think—a reusable water bottle. This small, inexpensive change can have a significant positive impact on the environment.
Week Two – Coffee Cups:
In the second week of our sustainability journey, the focus shifted to coffee cups. These seemingly harmless containers are often hiding an environmental menace. Most single-use “paper” cups contain a plastic coating, making recycling a rare occurrence. Globally, over half a trillion single-use cups are manufactured each year, equating to more than 70 cups for every person on Earth. Shockingly, most of these cups contain zero percent recycled material. Even “compostable” cups often end up in landfill where successful composting is not feasible.
RGS Worcester is committed to fostering a culture of sustainability, and these weekly initiatives are just the beginning. By raising awareness about the impact of everyday items like water bottles and coffee cups, we can collectively take small steps that lead to significant positive changes for our planet.
In the coming weeks, we will continue our journey, exploring new environmental topics, and finding ways to make our school a more sustainable and eco-friendly place. Together, we can make a difference—one week at a time. We look forward to sharing further updates on our sustainable initiative at RGS Worcester.
