Singing with the CBSO
RGS pupils have enjoyed two exciting concert experiences singing with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Chorus over the last two months.
In the summer holiday, Year Nine pupil Finnley Siembab and Teacher of Music, Miss Claire Spencer travelled to London, as members of the CBSO Children’s Chorus and Chorus to perform at the world-famous BBC Proms.
Finnley said of the experience: “Performing for the BBC Proms at the iconic Royal Albert Hall was such an amazing experience. We sang the world famous ‘Carmina Burana’ conducted by the brilliant CBSO Conductor Kazuki Yamada. We received a standing ovation at the end and it was an experience I shall never forget, especially as it was my last performance with the CBSO Choir and Miss Spencer.”
Following this concert, last week RGS Worcester pupils enjoyed a trip to watch Teacher of Music, Miss Spencer and the CBSO in action closer to home.
A Level Music student Millie Young, who has just joined RGS in the Lower Sixth, said about the trip: “Just two weeks into term and already on a school trip, it was a chance for me to make friends as a new starter here at RGS. Director of Music, Mr Soman took thirteen Music pupils and students from Years Nine to the Lower Sixth to see Miss Spencer as a choir member performing Verdi’s ‘Requiem’ with the CBSO at Symphony Hall, Birmingham. The experience was incredible, and the most memorable part was the piece ‘Dies Irae’, which was both moving and powerful, combining the full orchestra and choir. It was like a wall of sound that I felt completely immersed in, giving me shivers. We were very lucky with great seats and therefore had an amazing view of the four vocal soloists and the impressive range of instruments. After the concert we met Miss Spencer and congratulated her for her performance before having a good singsong on the way home!”
Of both events, Miss Claire Spencer said: “Singing with the CBSO Chorus is always a thrilling experience. To get to share this with the pupils made it even more special”.
