Year Nine Take to the Slopes in Unforgettable Half Term Ski Trip
While many were settling into a quiet February Half term, fifty Year Nine pupils set off on an unforgettable ski trip to Italy. Despite an early departure from RGS The Grange, spirits were high and, by lunchtime, the group had arrived to take in their first views of the mountains and the crisp alpine air.
The first afternoon was spent in preparation, with pupils collecting boots and skis before exploring the local village. Overnight, fresh snowfall transformed the resort, providing perfect conditions for the first full day on the slopes. Sunday marked the start of ski school, with pupils embracing an intensive and rewarding schedule of two hours of skiing in the morning and three hours in the afternoon, resulting in remarkable progress across all ability levels.
Those new to skiing showed impressive determination, quickly progressing from the nursery slopes to confidently tackling blue runs within the first two days. More experienced skiers explored wider areas of the mountain, venturing further afield and even skiing into neighbouring towns. Energy levels were kept high throughout the week, helped in no small part by generous portions of Italian pasta enjoyed each evening.
Thursday brought the greatest challenge, as heavy snowfall and low visibility tested both confidence and resilience. Although it became the group’s most eventful day for tumbles, morale remained strong, lifted by well-earned mountainside hot chocolates. The perseverance paid off when clear skies arrived for the final morning, revealing perfectly prepared pistes. Beginners celebrated a major milestone by successfully completing a long red run, while advanced groups pushed themselves on steep and technical black runs with growing confidence.
Evenings were equally memorable, with a busy programme of activities including swimming, sledging and discos. A particular highlight was the outdoor apres-ski session, where pupils danced together in the mountain air before heading down for dinner.
Skiing proved to be as much a mental challenge as a physical one, and throughout the week pupils demonstrated resilience, teamwork and determination. Whether overcoming difficult conditions or celebrating personal achievements on the slopes, the group were a credit to the School and returned home with lasting memories and a strong sense of accomplishment. Our thanks to all of the staff who gave up their Half term to support the pupils and especially to Mr Leeds for his superb organisation and leadership of a highly successful ski trip.
