Wins, Finals and Teamwork at Worcester Regatta
RGS Worcester rowers enjoyed a successful and encouraging day at Worcester Regatta, securing three wins from eighteen entries, with several other crews also progressing through to Finals. Alongside the results, Acting Head of Rowing, Mrs Tuckwood, was particularly pleased with the way pupils supported one another throughout the day, showing commitment, leadership and team spirit both on and off the water.
The first success came in the morning division, where Findan, who will be joining RGS Worcester in September, secured victory in the J16 double with current pupil Billie. This was the first RGS win and both rowers then stayed at the Regatta for the rest of the day, helping other crews, fetching and carrying equipment, supporting younger rowers and assisting wherever they were needed.
In the afternoon division, Sophie and Eva produced a particularly pleasing performance in their double. Having started the day feeling nervous and reluctant to race, the pair grew in confidence with every round, winning three races to reach the Final. Although they narrowly missed out to Worcester Rowing Club, their progress throughout the day was excellent and showed real determination.
There was another near miss for the Year Nine boys’ A quad, who also progressed through to the Final before being beaten by the eventual winners. Reaching the Final was still a strong achievement and reflected the effort and commitment shown by the crew across the day.
Later in the afternoon, RGS secured two further wins in quick succession. Freddie and Jacob continued the brothers’ family success with victory in the J18 double, before Oliver, Zac, Sihan and Ozzie won the J17 coxless four. This was another very pleasing result, particularly as the crew faced strong opposition from King’s School’s Boat Club, and the RGS team produced an excellent race to secure the win.
Former RGS students Liv and Lucy, both GB rowers, also competed and won in their Double. Liv is working at RGS during her gap year and has just come back from competing at the adult World’s Beach Sprints competition where she remarkably finished in 8th. Lucy has been out to Australia on her gap year. It was lovely to see the RGS team reunite and compete on their home stretch of the river!
Mrs Tuckwood was delighted with the results of the day, with three wins and several crews reaching Finals. She was also especially impressed with Shay, Caroline and Andrei, who coxed their crews and stayed for the whole day to support the Boat Club.
It was a very positive day for RGS Rowing, with pupils demonstrating determination, teamwork and care for one another throughout the Regatta. Congratulations to all rowers and coxes involved.
