RGS Worcester Pupils Take First Place in Regional Physics Quiz
Year Nine pupils recently represented RGS Worcester at the University of Birmingham’s Physics ‘Big Quiz’, competing against schools from across the Midlands.
The competition provided an exciting and intellectually challenging experience, encouraging pupils to test both their physics knowledge and their ability to apply key concepts under pressure. Quiz topics spanned a broad range of the subject, including fundamental principles, renowned scientists and research, as well as modern developments in quantum physics and space science. Competing against teams from other schools added to the sense of excitement and achievement.
In addition to the quiz, pupils attended a fascinating lecture on astrophysics, which explored the wonders of space and our home galaxy, the Milky Way. The session introduced pupils to the field of galactic archaeology, examining how scientists determine where stars formed and how galaxies evolve over time. Using examples from the European Space Agency’s Gaia mission, which has observed over one billion stars, the lecture demonstrated how astronomers “listen” to stars through their oscillations to uncover information about their size and composition. Techniques such as spectroscopy were also explained, showing how scientists identify elements in a star’s outer atmosphere. Pupils eagerly engaged with the content and confidently asked questions on stars and the Milky Way, keen to learn more.
The day concluded with outstanding success for RGS, whose team finished in first place ahead of strong competition from schools across the region. The winning team – Harry Edwards, Daniel Laugharne, Oscar Norman and Seb Steadman – were awarded medals and prizes in recognition of their achievement.
The visit was a memorable and inspiring experience, broadening pupils’ understanding of physics and offering a glimpse into the exciting possibilities of scientific study beyond the classroom.
