Cricket Season Commences with Allen Cup Alumni Fixture
The 2026 Cricket season began on Sunday at Flagge Meadow, as the 1st XI took on a strong Alumni XI in the annual Allen Cup fixture.
The Alumni won the toss and elected to bat first. Several rain delays throughout the afternoon created a stop-start innings; however, the visitors posted a competitive total of 211 for 8 from their 40 overs. The Alumni side featured a number of recent leavers, with George Hallam top-scoring with 71, well supported by Freddie Ammonds, who made 59. These two alumni and last year’s Captain Tom Odell were on good form having spent the last 6 months playing Cricket in Australia.
The 1st XI bowling performance was highly encouraging in challenging early-season conditions. Ben Eost was the standout performer, finishing with impressive figures of 7-2-12-2 and providing the control needed to keep the target within reach.
In response, the 1st XI made a positive start but ultimately finished on 171 for 8, falling 40 runs short. George Heywood led the way with a well-made 54, providing a solid platform; however, the Alumni’s experienced bowling attack made scoring difficult through the middle overs and gradually brought the innings under control.
While the Alumni XI retained the Allen Cup with a 40-run victory, the fixture provided a valuable early test for the squad as they prepare for the competitive season and look ahead to the RGS Cricket Festival. With the Alumni team entering the Cricketer Cup this year, a competition dating back to 1967 and featuring alumni teams from most of the leading Cricket independent schools nationally.
A special mention must also go to Head Groundsman, Sean Lloyd and his team for preparing an excellent surface at Flagge Meadow for the opening fixture of the season. We are so fortunate to have such expertise in our Grounds and Estates team at RGS.
