A Week of Rowing, Teamwork & Progress in France
During Half term, 20 RGS Worcester pupils and students from Year Ten to the Lower Sixth travelled to La Base in Temple-sur-Lot, France, for the annual Rowing Training Camp, enjoying a week of intensive training, technical development and team-building.
Despite a three-hour flight delay, the group arrived in France in good spirits, eager to begin training on the River Lot. Over the course of the week, rowers covered approximately 150 kilometres on the water, refining their technique, developing new skills and building confidence ahead of the forthcoming regatta season.
The camp provided valuable opportunities for pupils and students to train in mixed crews, working alongside teammates they would not ordinarily row with during the School term. Across the squads, coaches were particularly impressed by the progress made and the commitment demonstrated throughout the week.
The J15 Boys made significant improvements in both singles and quads, focusing on refining their technique and developing a more relaxed recovery phase. The Senior Girls impressed during a session featuring seven single sculls, while the Senior Boys made excellent use of the calm conditions to develop greater consistency and precision in their rowing.
Away from the water, the group enjoyed a range of activities, including a squad quiz, karaoke evening and swimming sessions. Another highlight was the opportunity to train in the gym used by elite athletes preparing for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The camp proved an excellent experience for everyone involved, strengthening friendships across the squads while developing resilience, teamwork and technical ability. The progress made throughout the week provides a strong foundation as RGS rowers prepare for the regatta season ahead.
Our thanks go to Mr Atkin, Mr Greenhouse, Mr Hales, Miss Scott and Mrs Crone for their support in organising and delivering such a successful training camp.
