Daisy Aces a Summer of Success on the Tennis Court
Lower Sixth student Daisy Williams has enjoyed an exceptional summer of Tennis, showcasing her talent and determination across a series of high-level tournaments. Her season began with the Malvern Open and culminated in an intense run of competitions, including the Ladies County Cup and the County Championships, where she firmly established herself as one of Herefordshire and Worcestershire’s most promising young players.
Following strong performances at trials over Easter and May Half-term, Daisy was selected as one of only eight players to represent Herefordshire and Worcestershire in the prestigious Ladies County Cup in Eastbourne. Despite being the youngest member of the squad, Daisy was not simply a reserve. She was selected for the number 2 pair throughout the tournament, competing against five strong County teams, including Sussex, Dorset and Cambridgeshire, and impressively played 15 matches in just one week.
At the County Championships, Daisy’s consistency and skill shone once again. She reached the finals of all three of her events: the 18U Singles, Girls’ Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Her long-standing partnership with Gina, a fellow County player from Bromsgrove, proved as effective as ever, and she also enjoyed success with her Mixed Doubles partner, a player she has known since childhood. Daisy’s achievements were made all the more remarkable by her busy schedule; immediately after her finals match, she travelled straight to Nottingham to join her School Hockey teammates for a tournament.
The following weekend brought further success at the Manor Park Club Finals, one of the highlights of the local tennis calendar. With over 800 members competing across the season, reaching finals day is a significant accomplishment. Daisy reached the final in all three of her events: Ladies’ Singles, Ladies’ Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. She finished as runner-up in both the Singles and Ladies’ Doubles, before triumphing in the Mixed Doubles with a hard-fought victory in the championship tie-break.
Alongside these competitions, Daisy has continued to represent Manor Park’s Ladies’ A Team and Mixed B Team, playing regularly in local and regional leagues. She has also benefited from the support of Mrs Jilly Witcomb, RGS Worcester’s own international-level tennis player, who has played at Wimbledon not once but twice this summer! Mrs Witcomb joined her during County Championships week to help Daisy prepare for key matches.
This outstanding run of performances highlights Daisy’s commitment, resilience, and ability to balance her tennis with her many other sporting commitments. We look forward to seeing her continued success both on and off the court.
