Shakespeare Brought to Life in Sixth Form Visit to the RSC
On Thursday 25 September, 55 of our GCSE and A Level Drama students had the exciting opportunity to travel to Stratford-upon-Avon to watch ‘Measure for Measure’ at the Royal Shakespeare Company, directed by Emily Burns.
The production was a powerful, modern adaptation that shed light on the play’s enduring relevance, exploring justice, morality, and power through a contemporary lens. For our students, this was not just a theatre trip but a chance to see Shakespeare’s words come alive in ways that directly connect to the real-world issues they grapple with in their studies and beyond.
Watching professional practitioners at work offered invaluable insight into how performance choices can transform a text’s meaning. Many students commented about how seeing the play staged so creatively will help deepen their understanding for their upcoming live theatre responses.
Equally impressive was the maturity and enthusiasm our students displayed throughout the evening. Despite the late finish, the coach ride home buzzed with lively discussion and thoughtful debate about the production’s themes and interpretations, proof that live theatre truly inspires and provokes lasting reflection.
It was a memorable night for all involved, combining academic enrichment with a shared cultural experience our students won’t soon forget.
