Science ‘Eggstravaganza’ Returns for British Science Week
RGS Worcester celebrated British Science Week with the return of its annual Science ‘Eggstravaganza’, welcoming pupils from across the RGS Family of Schools and local primary schools for two engineering challenge events.
The nationwide celebration, organised by the British Science Association, promotes Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) through a programme of activities designed to encourage curiosity and problem-solving.
This year’s ‘Eggstravaganza’ took place across two days. On Thursday, 63 pupils from RGS The Grange and RGS Dodderhill took part in an internal challenge, while on Wednesday RGS Worcester welcomed 76 pupils from twelve local primary schools as part of the School’s Outreach and Partnerships Programme.
Schools taking part included Fladbury Primary School, Alvechurch CofE First School, Flyford Flavell First School, Northwick Manor Primary School, St George’s Catholic Primary School, Somers Park Primary School, Belbroughton CofE Primary School, Pitmaston Primary School, Norton Juxta Kempsey CofE Primary School, Upton Snodsbury CofE First School, Broadheath C.E. Primary School, Broadwas CofE Primary School and Claines CofE Primary School.
Head of Science, Dr Howard Smith, welcomed pupils before introducing the challenge. Working in teams, pupils were tasked with designing and building a bridge capable of supporting the weight of a chocolate cream egg from its midpoint. The bridges had to span across two desks and measure a minimum of 10 centimetres in width.
Teams spent time planning their designs before constructing their bridges, considering how to create strong and stable structures. In addition to supporting the egg, teams were awarded additional marks for style, teamwork and ingenuity.
All of the teams produced bridges which included supporting design features and the Headmaster Mr Pitt, Senior Deputy Head Mr Beecham and Head of Lower School Mrs Newport found it difficult to separate the entries. In the end, with just a few points between all of the schools, Dr Smith announced the winners of ‘Eggstravaganza’:
1st Place – Fladbury Primary School
2nd Place – Claines CofE Primary School
3rd Place – Norton Juxta Kempsey CofE Primary School,
Congratulations to all of the pupils who took part in this year’s ‘Eggstravaganza’. They all took home a certificate to mark their achievements and a creme egg to celebrate!
