Rugby, Culture & Adventure in South Africa

During the summer holidays, Senior Boys travelled to South Africa for a 12-day Rugby tour, combining high-level sporting competition with an extensive programme of cultural, historical and outdoor experiences. The Under 15 and Under 17 squads tested themselves against leading South African schools, including Pretoria Boys High, Dundee High School and Northwood, experiencing a different style and intensity of Rugby while gaining valuable experience of competing internationally.

The fixtures provided an excellent opportunity for pupils to challenge themselves against strong opposition, adapt to unfamiliar conditions and develop as teams both on and off the pitch. Across the tour, the squads demonstrated determination, resilience and a willingness to learn, while enjoying the opportunity to represent RGS Worcester in a very different sporting environment.

Away from Rugby, pupils immersed themselves in South African culture and history through a varied programme of visits. At Lesedi Cultural Village, they gained an insight into the traditions and heritage of South Africa, while visits to the historic battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift brought important moments of the country’s history to life.

The tour also offered some memorable opportunities to experience South Africa’s remarkable landscapes and wildlife. Pupils visited Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve for an unforgettable safari experience, alongside St Lucia Wetlands and Durban’s coastline. A visit to Loftus Stadium provided another Rugby highlight, while a range of team-building activities encouraged pupils to work together and make the most of every aspect of the trip.

Combining competitive Rugby with history, culture, wildlife and adventure, the tour provided an exceptional experience for both squads. Pupils returned having developed their Rugby, strengthened friendships and shared a host of experiences and memories that will remain with them long after the tour.
