History, Politics, Business & Economics Trip to the USA

In July, thirty-four Lower Sixth Politics, History, Business and Economics students and five staff travelled to New York and Washington DC for a five-day visit exploring American history, politics and culture. The contrasting character of the two cities provided a memorable setting for the trip, from the energy and bustle of New York to the broad avenues and political landmarks of Washington DC.

New York was the first stop and offered plenty of opportunities to experience American culture. Highlights included standing in the midst of Times Square during Pokémon anniversary celebrations, with Pokémon appearing across the screens, sailing on the Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty and watching SIX on Broadway. There were also moments for reflection during a visit to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, while Top of the Rock provided impressive night-time views across the New York skyline.

The group then travelled to Washington DC, stopping in Philadelphia to visit Independence Hall, where the US Constitution was debated and signed. In Washington, students explored major monuments including those dedicated to George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, the First World War, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. A visit to the US Capitol and a question and answer session with a Congressional advisor provided valuable political insight, before the group visited the White House, the National Museum of American History and the National Air and Space Museum.

It was an excellent five days and a memorable introduction to the history, politics and culture of the United States.
