RGS Hosts a Thriving Fencing Gala with Competitors from Across the Region
The RGS Fencing Gala was once again a vibrant and well-supported occasion, welcoming fencers from a wide range of clubs and schools. We were delighted to see several coaches, parents and former students of Fencing Coach, Nick Chapman return to assist with refereeing and event support. In total, 84 fencers took part in seven competitions across sixteen pistes in Cobham and Tom Savage Halls, with activity running smoothly from the first arrivals at 9.00am through to the close of the day.
The Gala is designed to be an inclusive entry point into competitive fencing, attracting many participants who are relatively new to the sport. As always, our welcoming atmosphere meant that coaches were on hand early to guide fencers to the correct weapon groups and age categories. While a brief technical issue delayed access to prearranged data, the coaching and warm-up sessions ensured the morning continued productively. The day saw continuous, energetic fencing across both halls. Feedback from participants and parents at the end of the event was extremely positive.
We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the Gala: parents, coaches and students, both past and present, whose support is invaluable. Particular recognition goes to the Under19 Épéeist, who not only refereed their own competition but also assisted with clearing Cobham Hall afterwards, including packing away equipment and preparing the space for Monday’s lessons.
The last thank you must go to Nick Chapman. This event is a huge undertaking, requiring a massive amount of time and energy and it is down to him that it runs every year.
