Old Elizabethans Make Cricketer Cup Debut
The RGS alumni Cricket team called the Old Elizabethans Cricket team travelled to Radley College recently to play the Radley alumni team, the Radley Rangers, in the first round of the National Cricketer Cup.
This prestigious competition dates back to 1967 and includes alumni teams from many of the leading sports independent schools in the country. This was the first year that RGS has entered this level of competition.
Radley won the toss and elected to field first. Strong contributions throughout the batting order, including Freddie Ammonds, Alex Wheeler, Rhodri Williams and Ben Sutton, alongside a half-century from Tom Odell, helped RGS post a competitive total of 224 from their 50 overs.
Radley’s strong batting line-up, featuring several county 2nd XI players and captained by former England international Jamie Dalrymple, made a confident start to the run chase. However, the Old Elizabethans fought back well through disciplined spin bowling, reducing Radley to 114-6. Tom Odell led the way with four wickets, supported by Luke Allen with two wickets. A strong eighth-wicket partnership eventually saw Radley reach the target with 10 balls remaining.
It was an excellent effort from the Old Elizabethans in their debut fixture in the Cricketer Cup and a performance that reflected the continued strength of OE Cricket.
Our thanks go to all of the former pupils involved, not only this season but across the past decade of Cricketer Trophy competition, as well as to the School for its continued support.
The match also demonstrated why the Old Elizabethans’ inclusion in this prestigious national competition, featuring many of the country’s leading Cricket schools, is such a deserved one.
