National Champions and County Success for Girls’ Hockey
The RGS Worcester Girls’ Hockey teams have achieved outstanding success this season, with the Under 13s crowned National Champions, the Under 15s finishing third nationally, and further County titles secured across the age groups.
The Under 13 girls produced an exceptional performance at the Independent Schools Hockey Cup Finals in Nottingham. In the semi-final, RGS delivered a dominant 7-0 victory over Eltham College, combining sharp passing, disciplined pressing and precision finishing.
The final against Alleyn’s School proved a far tighter contest. RGS took the lead twice in a closely fought match that ultimately went to penalty strokes. Demonstrating remarkable composure, the girls converted three decisive penalties to seal the championship. For a squad made up of Years Seven and Eight pupils, the maturity shown under pressure was particularly impressive.
Head of Hockey, Miss Walton, praised the team, saying: “To keep cool heads in big moments, the girls showed maturity beyond their years. This is a very exciting Year group for Hockey to have coming up through the School”.
The Under 15 girls also delivered an impressive performance at the National Cup Finals, securing third place in the country. In their semi-final against St John’s Leatherhead, RGS battled back from 2-0 down to level at 2-2 before conceding a late goal in a narrow 3-2 defeat.
The squad responded with determination against Ipswich School in the 3rd place play-off match, producing a composed and disciplined display to secure a 4-2 victory and a national podium finish.
“Finishing third in a national competition is an amazing achievement when we are combining Years Nine and Ten pupils”, said Miss Walton. “The girls have done themselves and the School proud, and I look forward to seeing where we can take this group next season.”
Success has also been evident at County level. The Under 12A team were crowned County Champions and progressed to the Regional Finals, while the Under 13A side became joint County Champions after defeating King’s School and drawing against Bromsgrove School.
Headmaster, Mr Pitt, commented, “These are exceptional achievements across our age groups which demonstrate the strength and depth of our Hockey now. I am immensely proud of the girls for their achievements at National and County level. Many congratulations to the teams and to the coaches and thank you to the parents for all your support including on the touchline in the rain! RGS grit and determination once again have shone through.”
Together, these results underline the consistency, resilience and teamwork demonstrated by the girls in Hockey throughout the season. Their National titles and County successes represent an outstanding collective achievement of which they should be immensely proud.
