BTEC Sport Students Explore Industry Pathways
Sixth Form students studying the Level Three BTEC Sport qualification attended Careers in Sport LIVE last Friday. This event is designed for 14 to 17 year olds to explore the wide range of career opportunities available within sport, fitness and health.
The day began with a keynote address from Harvey Grout, Founder and CEO of Careers in Sport, who spoke about the power of sport to connect and inspire. Students then took part in a series of interactive workshops, including a teamwork and leadership session led by Ben Holden and a sports business challenge delivered by Joshua Howells-Holloway from the Warwickshire Cricket Foundation. In this activity, students worked in teams as the management group of a fictional sports club, making decisions on marketing and sponsorship before pitching their ideas to industry professionals.
The afternoon focused on the evolving modern sports industry. Lee Moulson, a presenter from Sky Sports, led a session on sports media and personal branding, encouraging students to present their passions and ambitions with confidence. Mr Simon de Waal from the University of Gloucestershire delivered an applied science in sport workshop, where students explored sports psychology, nutrition and performance analysis through practical case studies.
One of the most valuable elements of the event was a panel discussion exploring the question “University or Apprenticeship?” Professionals from CIMSPA, the Coach Core Foundation, Cardiff Metropolitan University and Hartpury University shared their experiences and offered guidance to help students consider their next steps. The day also included a careers fair, where students had the opportunity to speak directly with industry professionals working across coaching, personal training, sports therapy and facility management.
The event concluded with an inspiring session from Jamie Khan, co-author of How to Become a Football Agent, who encouraged students to take opportunities, build networks and pursue their ambitions with confidence. The visit proved particularly worthwhile, with one RGS Worcester student securing a job interview following conversations with employers during the event.
