An Unexpected Journey Begins: ‘The Hobbit’ Comes to Life on the RGS Stage
Auditions are underway from next week for the Summer Production of ‘The Hobbit’, adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien’s much-loved novel. Directed by Teacher of Drama, Mr Jak Garrity, the production will involve pupils from Years Seven to Nine and promises to be an exciting theatrical experience for Lower School students.
Excitement surrounding the production was evident from the outset, with a packed theatre of pupils attending the official reveal to discover this year’s chosen play. The announcement was met with considerable enthusiasm, and interest has continued to build, with over 60 pupils already signed up to audition.
First published in 1937, The Hobbit remains a timeless story of adventure, courage and friendship. It follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins, an unlikely hero who is drawn into an epic quest alongside a group of dwarves and the wizard Gandalf. Along the way, Bilbo encounters a host of memorable characters and challenges, ultimately discovering a strength and resilience he never knew he possessed.
During the audition process, pupils are encouraged to explore a wide range of characters and creatures from Tolkien’s richly imagined world of Middle-earth, developing key drama skills including physical theatre, voice and characterisation. The approach has been designed to be inclusive and supportive, enabling pupils of all levels of experience to engage creatively with the material.
Speaking about the production, Mr Garrity said, “I am very much looking forward to adapting this classic novel and bringing Tolkien’s world of Middle-earth to the stage. I have always admired the films, and I am excited to see how our pupils bring these characters to life through rehearsals.”
The Summer Production promises to be an ambitious and rewarding opportunity for our younger pupils, offering valuable experience in creativity, collaboration and performance, both on and off the stage. Further details, including casting information and performance dates, will be announced later in the term.
