Inspiring Future Mathematicians
Before Christmas, over 40 Lower Sixth pupils studying A Level Mathematics visited Warwick University to attend a ‘Maths in Action’ event looking at some of the applications of the subject beyond school. Sixth Form student Phoebe Anstey shares her reflections:
“There were many interesting talks on a wide variety of subjects, all based on mathematical thinking, for example, knitting, Pokémon, DNA, and even tea. One of the talks was about statistics, which many of us found very interesting as we are looking forward to studying the statistics part of the syllabus. This talk was given by Professor Jennifer Visser-Rogers who explained how, in medical testing, you must apply statistical data in order to calculate whether or not a certain drug actually has an effect. She emphasised how this is important because statistical data can often be worded or looked at in a way which makes it appear correct at first, even when it isn’t. We also had a short talk about how to achieve success in A Level Maths exams, which was very useful as we are now navigating the changes in the style of exam questions after finishing our GCSEs last year.”
