Pupils Explore Pilot Pathways at Aviation Careers Seminar
Last Thursday, pupils enjoyed an exciting and informative Careers Seminar led by trainee commercial pilots Matt Norris and Lewis Orr from Leading Edge Aviation, who visited the School to share their experiences of the demanding yet rewarding pathway to becoming an airline pilot. Both Matt and Lewis outlined their routes into aviation, describing the skills, qualifications and determination required to progress from early flying experience to operating advanced twin-engine aircraft. They spoke enthusiastically about the high global demand for pilots, explaining that Leading Edge’s integrated modular programme sees 99% of its graduates secure roles within three months, with many receiving conditional job offers even before completing their training.
Pupils learned about the structure of the Leading Edge course, which includes ground school in Oxford and Spain, extensive simulator practice and 220-230 hours of flight training over an intensive 18-month period. The option to undertake an accompanying degree programme was also highlighted. Matt and Lewis explained the importance of attributes such as strong decision-making, teamwork and the ability to manage workload effectively. They encouraged pupils to pace themselves, maintain good wellbeing habits and seek support early should challenges arise.
The speakers also outlined the wide range of career opportunities within the aviation sector. Alongside commercial airline roles, they described opportunities in business aviation, cargo and freight operations, military flying, flight instruction and aerospace industry specialisms. They shared their own experiences flying Diamond DA40 and DA42 aircraft, discussed the process of progressing from a private pilot licence to a commercial licence and explained how pilots later obtain type ratings specific to the aircraft used by their airline.
Pupils were given clear guidance on entry requirements for pilot training, including GCSEs, A levels, a Class One medical and a DBS check, as well as an overview of the skills assessments used during selection. The speakers emphasised the importance of attending open days to gain a deeper understanding of training expectations and recommended that interested pupils explore fully funded routes offered by major airlines.
The session concluded with a lively question-and-answer discussion and an invitation for pupils to speak with the presenters individually. Their visit offered an invaluable insight into life as a trainee pilot, the realities of modern flight training and the exciting opportunities the aviation industry continues to offer.
