Exploring Future Pathways at Oxford University
A group of Year Ten pupils visited Oxford University as part of its Open Day, gaining valuable insight into University life, the admissions process and the opportunities available beyond school.
During the visit, pupils were split into two groups and explored several Oxford colleges, including Balliol College, Trinity College and The Queen’s College, as well as the Bodleian Library. Guided tours led by student ambassadors gave pupils the opportunity to see student facilities and learn more about day-to-day life at University. At Balliol, pupils were also able to ask current students subject-specific questions, helping them to understand more about the courses and academic pathways available.
Both groups attended admissions talks, led by Dr Lisa Walker at Balliol and Dr Rebecca Bullard at Trinity. These sessions helped pupils to understand the application process, while also providing useful guidance on what to expect after applying.
Pupils were also given time to explore some of Oxford’s most well-known landmarks, gaining a flavour of life in the city beyond lectures. Highlights included Blackwell’s bookshop, with its impressive underground space filled with books of all genres, and the Bodleian Library, one of the UK’s legal deposit libraries. These visits helped pupils to appreciate the city’s national significance and the breadth of knowledge available to Oxford students.
The day concluded with time in Oxford’s Covered Market, where pupils enjoyed exploring the shops and stopping for refreshments. The group was accompanied by Miss Eddy, an RGS Worcester alumna currently studying Classics at St Hilda’s College, Oxford, who was able to answer lots of questions about life at Oxford. Pupils were also accompanied by Dr Russell, Mr Phillips and Mr Hallett.
The visit was an excellent opportunity for pupils to observe, explore and learn more about life at one of the world’s leading universities.
