Lower Sixth Learn with the Lords

On Wednesday 10 June, Baroness Fookes took part in an online question and answer session with the Lower Sixth Politics students as part of the popular ‘Learn with the Lords’ programme. 

Baroness Fookes was a Conservative MP for 27 years from 1970, entering the House of Lords in 1997. She has a particular interest in animal welfare, farming and defence and is currently a Deputy Speaker in the Lords. During the event, she talked about her role and work of the House of Lords, before answering questions from students on topics ranging from her views on Margaret Thatcher to questions on House of Lords reform, fox hunting and social media.

Lower Sixth Politics student, Gabby, writes, “At our ‘Learn with the Lords’ session, Baroness Fookes provided an extraordinary insight into both the House of Lords and the House of Commons. Each student had prepared a question for her and we received excellent answers. We asked about everything from the challenges of her job to her views on relevant pieces of legislation and the state of society. Baroness Fookes told us about experiences that had shaped her life and her political career, showing us the real-world applications of concepts we had learnt in class. While only lasting forty-five minutes, the session gave us a lasting understanding of the political system from the perspective of a seasoned politician.”
