Debating Debut for Year Eight Pupils at KMAT Debate Boxing Competition
On Monday 11 May, ten Year Eight pupils represented RGS Worcester at the KMAT Debate Boxing event held at the University of Warwick. This marked an important milestone for the School as it was our first time participating in this prestigious regional competition, which brought together 23 schools from across the region.
The ‘Debate Boxing’ format provides an intense test of intellectual stamina and verbal dexterity. Although pupils were briefed on the topics in advance, they remained unaware of which side they would be defending or the order of play until each round began.
Success in this format requires far more than prepared notes alone. Pupils must demonstrate strong mental agility, adapting arguments in real time and delivering thoughtful rebuttals under pressure. The competition demands persuasive public speaking, quick thinking and the ability to remain composed in front of experienced judges.
RGS pupils rose to the challenge superbly. Two teams represented the School across separate rooms, with both teams finishing in a highly commendable fourth place overall. While narrowly missing out on the medal positions, the pupils competed with confidence and maturity throughout against exceptionally strong opposition.
The day concluded with individual recognition for three pupils. Jacob, Sophie and Isobel were each named ‘Stand-out Debaters’, recognised by the judges as among the strongest speakers of the competition.
We congratulate the entire Year Eight squad on such an impressive debut performance and look forward to seeing them continue to develop their Debating skills in future competitions.
