Superball Success for RGS Worcester
Last Saturday, RGS Worcester’s 1st VII Netball team secured an impressive 43-33 victory over King’s School Worcester in the annual ‘Superball’ fixture at the University of Worcester Arena.
The evening began with a closely contested match between the 2nd VII teams, where RGS edged a narrow 17-16 win in an excellent opening to the evening. Congratulations to the players for closing out the match and earning a well-deserved win after a strong Netball season. The Arena was more full than ever before for the 2nd team match and the supporters were rewarded with an excellent display of skill and determination.
The Superball event brought together pupils, families and the wider School community in a celebration of girls’ sport. Prep School pupils from both RGS Worcester and King’s School took part in a coaching session led by players from Birmingham Panthers and coaches from Super Sports, while Dance performances from pupils in both Senior Schools added to the occasion.
In the 1st VII match, RGS established a strong start and held a 19-15 lead at half-time in a well-contested game. Building on this advantage, the team delivered a composed and disciplined second-half performance, combining confident shooting with effective defensive play to extend their lead and secure a deserved victory.
Captain Eden Williamson lifted the Superball trophy at the final whistle, while Annika Potter was named Player of the Match for her excellent performance at Goal Defence.
Headmaster, Mr John Pitt, said: “What an incredible match and a wonderful experience for the players of both teams. It was fantastic to see so many people supporting the girls in such a special setting. Well done to all of the players and to the RGS coaches, Miss Gwilliam, Miss Sly and Miss Lategan. The team’s determination and commitment were clear throughout, and they will have inspired younger pupils watching on.”
The result follows further success for the team, who recently finished third nationally at the ‘Sisters ‘n Sport’ Netball Finals at Loughborough University. The 1st team has had great success this season, playing 34 matches. The girls have inspired players in all 25 Netball teams that have represented RGS this season including A-F teams at Under 12 and Under 13.
Congratulations to all involved for a superb performance and a very memorable evening for RGS Netball.
