Sixways Showdown for RGS Worcester 1st XI against King’s School
The RGS Worcester 1st XI Football team took to the impressive stage of Sixways Stadium for this year’s Challenge Cup fixture against King’s Worcester, in what proved to be an exciting and competitive match between the two Schools.
Captained by Ellis Williamson, RGS began the match with confidence and energy. The first clear opportunity came early in the fourth minute when Dougie Higgs made a powerful run forward, forcing King’s to concede the first corner of the game. RGS continued to press, dominating possession for much of the first half, with Lucas Jones particularly influential in midfield as the team worked hard to control the tempo of the match. Despite creating a number of promising chances, it was King’s who broke the deadlock during the first half with a long range strike. The RGS supporters leapt to their feet when the team appeared to score, only for it to be ruled offside by the Assistant Referee.
After the interval, following a motivating team talk from Head of Football, Mr Gary Leeds, the RGS side returned to the pitch determined to respond.
The second half was fiercely contested, with opportunities at both ends of the pitch. King’s extended their lead after converting a penalty, as RGS continued to push forward. The team came agonisingly close to scoring on several occasions, striking the crossbar twice, yet the elusive goal remained just out of reach despite the squad’s sustained effort and determination.
Head of Football, Mr Gary Leeds, said: “Well done to both teams for providing such an entertaining match. It was fantastic to see our 1st XI representing the School at the impressive Sixways Stadium, something many of the players have looked forward to throughout their time at RGS. Thank you to all the parents and staff who have supported the team this season.”
Headmaster, Mr John Pitt, commented, “This was a superb match and a really enjoyable spectacle with some excellent Football played. The Football gods were perhaps not on our side tonight and that happens sometimes, but the boys showed tremendous skill and determination throughout the match. They will remember the occasion and now look forward to their next Cup match. Well done to every player, thank you to Mr Leeds and the coaches, and I hope all of the supporters enjoyed a great match played in exactly the right spirit.”
The team now looks ahead to the Worcestershire Schools Under 18 Cup, where they have earned a home semi-final after topping their group with four wins and a draw. The squad will be hoping to build on a strong season as they prepare for the next stage of the competition.
Thank you to everyone who came along to support the fixture, and to King’s Worcester for a competitive match at such a memorable venue.
