Year Ten Explore Carding Mill Valley
Last week, 82 Year Ten GCSE Geography pupils headed to Carding Mill Valley in Shropshire for the first of two fieldwork days. Unusually for Geography fieldwork, the sun shone, and the weather conditions for exploring the valley were perfect.
The pupils demonstrated tremendous enthusiasm throughout the trip. Despite the riverbed being drier than usual, the pupils successfully gathered valuable data on the river’s width, depth, bed load, and velocity, even with the rather damp spring weather. This fieldwork exercise provided an excellent opportunity for them to reinforce their understanding of Geography theory, particularly in relation to the Rivers Unit they have been studying. They were able to observe fascinating features such as interlocking spurs, waterfalls, and changes in the bedload.
The National Trust’s education staff and various members of the public commented positively on the pupils’ attitude and general demeanour, which the Geography Department always appreciates.
