Year Eleven Gain Insight into Network Systems and Cyber Security
Last week, Year Eleven Computer Science pupils took part in a behind-the-scenes tour of the School’s IT infrastructure, led by RGS Assistant IT Services Manager, Mr Tilling.
The visit provided a valuable opportunity for pupils to connect their classroom learning with real-world application, as they explored how data travels across the School’s network, from individual devices to wider digital systems.
During the tour, pupils examined key components of the School’s infrastructure, including high-speed fibre-optic cabling and the network switches responsible for routing data across the site. A visit to the server room highlighted the importance of environmental controls, such as cooling systems and uninterruptible power supplies, in maintaining reliable and secure operations.
Pupils also gained insight into how routers and wireless access points work together to support a seamless connection for hundreds of devices across the School.
A significant focus of the visit was cyber security. Pupils learned about the layered approach used to protect the School’s network, including firewalls, filtering systems and secure authentication processes. The session also highlighted the importance of user awareness, with practical examples demonstrating how individuals play a key role in maintaining digital security.
This informative visit enhanced pupils’ understanding of network systems and cyber security, while reinforcing key concepts from their Computer Science studies.
