Success and Participation Highlight a Busy Term for RGS Debating
The Michaelmas Term has been an excellent one for the RGS Debating Society, with pupils across the School taking part in national competitions and demonstrating growing confidence in public speaking. At the start of December, two RGS teams competed in the opening round of the English Speaking Union (ESU) Public Speaking Competition and both earned a place in the next stage. With only 3 of the 12 teams progressing, this was a noteworthy achievement for our pupils. The Year Eleven team of Ridhima Canchi (Speaker), Cameron Henry (Questioner) and Henry Jarvis (Chairperson), alongside the Year Ten team of Michael McCabe (Speaker), Amy Higgins (Questioner) and Xavier Veasey (Chairperson), delivered poised and thoughtful contributions throughout, engaging clearly with the challenging issues presented on the day.
RGS Worcester also had the privilege of hosting a round of the ESU Mace Debating Competition in Eld Hall. Our Sixth Form team, Zac Johnson as first speaker, Sienna Heath as second speaker and Anya Wood offering the summary speech, presented a well-structured and articulate case. Although they did not progress on this occasion, the judges praised their composure and delivery. Their performance was particularly impressive given that the Mace format differs from the British Parliamentary style in which RGS pupils primarily train, highlighting the adaptability and commitment of the team.
As the term draws to a close, the Debating Society is looking ahead to a busy and exciting start to the New Year. With our public speakers advancing to the next ESU rounds and our British Parliamentary teams preparing for the prestigious Oxford, Cambridge and Nottingham competitions in the Lent Term, pupils remain motivated and enthusiastic about the opportunities ahead.
