Outstanding National Success in Cambridge Biology Challenge

Upper Sixth students Liv, Heidi and Catherine have achieved an outstanding result in the Homerton College Cambridge Biology Challenge, finishing eighth out of 941 teams from across the country.

Run by Homerton College, University of Cambridge, this nationwide competition encourages students to explore Biology through creative problem-solving, scientific reasoning and open-ended thinking. Rather than focusing solely on factual knowledge, participants are challenged to approach questions in a style similar to those they may encounter through Cambridge-style questions and interviews.

Teams of up to five work throughout the academic year to respond to four challenging questions, with this year’s topics ranging from whether new life can be created and the role of Mathematics in Biology, to intelligence in non-human organisms and the skills required for success in Biology. Teams are free to choose how they communicate their ideas, with formats including essays, posters, videos, podcasts and presentations.

This was the first year RGS Worcester has taken part in the competition. While several teams began the Challenge, Liv, Heidi and Catherine persevered to complete all four questions, ultimately securing an exceptional eighth-place finish.

Only the top ten teams were invited to Homerton College, University of Cambridge to celebrate their achievements for a special event recognising the competition’s highest-performing teams and they enjoyed their visit last weekend.

Finishing eighth from 941 entries is a superb achievement and reflects the students’ commitment, teamwork and enthusiasm for exploring Biology beyond the curriculum. Congratulations to Liv, Heidi and Catherine on this outstanding national success.
