Lower School Boys Represent RGS at National ESSA Swimming Finals
The Years Seven and Eight Boys’ Swimming Academy Team enjoyed an excellent day of competition at the ESSA Championships last Saturday. From start to finish, the boys embraced the experience, maintaining their enthusiasm and supporting one another throughout the event.
The team had set their sights on progressing in the Medley Relay to the final, having posted a strong qualification time of 2:23. Despite their best efforts, the race did not unfold as planned and they recorded a time of 2:26. Although the result was disappointing, the boys remained positive and focused on the remainder of the day.
Their Freestyle Relay was a strong response, with the team delivering an impressive performance and reducing their qualification time from 2:15 to 2:13. While this still fell just short of the extremely competitive final cut for the final, the improvement demonstrated their determination and ability to rise to the occasion.
There were special moments beyond the racing. Team Captain, Noah Noakes, led the group with confidence and good humour, especially during the pool parade. Meanwhile, James Walter had the memorable opportunity to interview Brock Whiston, Gold Medallist in the Paris 2024 SM8 Individual Medley. Only three schools, RGS Worcester, Bromsgrove, and Newcastle-under-Lyme, were selected to take part in the live-stream interview, making it a particular highlight for James and the team.
The boys’ achievements were supported by the dedication of RGS Swimming Academy coaches Mark and Chris. In recent weeks, Mark’s commitment to preparing the team has been exceptional. His attention to detail, endless timekeeping and energetic coaching have motivated the boys and helped them feel confident and valued throughout their training.
Well done to the squad of Noah Noakes, James Walter, Logan Nicholls and Alex Wardle Griffol for their hard work and exceptional teamwork.
