Inside a Career in Medicine with Former Pupil Dr Sohal
Last Thursday, pupils interested in exploring a future career in Medicine welcomed former RGS Worcester pupil Dr Gurjivan Sohal for the latest Careers Seminar.
Dr Sohal returned to RGS to share his journey from School to Keele University Medical School and, most recently, to working as a newly qualified doctor at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in Birmingham. Drawing on his own experiences, he gave pupils an honest insight into both studying Medicine and beginning a career as a doctor.
The Seminar explored what Medical School is really like, from the early years studying areas such as Anatomy and Physiology to the clinical years spent gaining practical experience in hospitals and GP practices. Dr Sohal also reflected on what he particularly enjoyed about Medicine, including the variety of opportunities available and the chance to experience different areas of healthcare before deciding where to specialise.
Pupils also learned more about the day-to-day role of a doctor, including assessing patients, communicating with families and working alongside a wider healthcare team. Dr Sohal discussed the many different career paths available within Medicine and the skills required for the profession, particularly communication, resilience and knowing when to seek advice from colleagues.
For those considering Medicine themselves, Dr Sohal shared practical insight into the pathway to Medical School, including A Level choices, work experience, the UCAT and interview process. He encouraged pupils not to feel they needed to have everything decided immediately, reflecting on his own journey towards choosing Medicine.
The Seminar concluded with an open question and answer discussion, giving pupils the opportunity to ask about Medical School, University life and Dr Sohal’s experiences of working as a doctor.
This event forms part of the wider Careers provision at RGS Worcester, which includes a dedicated Medics, Dentists and Vets Programme for pupils considering future careers in Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine. Through specialist guidance, talks and opportunities to explore these highly competitive pathways, the programme supports pupils as they consider their subject choices, applications and future ambitions.
Our thanks go to Dr Sohal for returning to RGS Worcester and generously sharing his experiences and advice. It was particularly valuable for pupils to hear first-hand from a former RGS pupil about the journey from School to Medical School and into the profession.
