Inclusive Sport in Action for RGS Worcester BTEC Students
RGS Worcester BTEC Sport students recently took part in a Wheelchair Basketball Workshop at the University of Worcester Arena, gaining valuable insight into the principles of inclusive sport. Through direct participation, students experienced the technical and physical demands of wheelchair basketball, developing a deeper appreciation for the skill, agility and tactical awareness required in adaptive athletics. This practical opportunity strengthened their understanding of accessibility in sport and also connected closely with their BTEC studies, enabling them to analyse movement adaptations and performance in a specialist environment.
The workshop exemplified the ethos of the BTEC Sport course, which centres on learning through practical experience. Delivered through a series of themed units, the vocational qualification explores key areas of Sport Science, including Anatomy and Physiology, Fitness Training, Psychology, Skill Acquisition, Business, Coaching and Leadership. Assessment takes place through assignments rooted in real-life scenarios, encouraging students to apply their knowledge in ways that reflect the expectations of employers and higher education.
Success on the course requires enthusiasm for all aspects of Sport, alongside strong organisation, effective communication and the confidence to take initiative in both individual and team settings. Students learn in the classroom, on the field and through external opportunities such as work placements and the Community Sports Leaders Award (CSLA), helping them gain a well-rounded understanding of the sporting landscape.
