Comic Chaos Awaits as Opening Night Approaches for ‘One Man, Two Guv’nors’
With opening night approaching, pupils from Years Ten to Upper Sixth are preparing to bring this year’s Senior School production, One Man, Two Guv’nors, to the stage.
Directed by Mr Garrity, the production promises an evening of energetic theatre, combining physical comedy, fast-paced dialogue and moments of audience interaction. With two alternating casts performing across the run, audiences can expect a lively interpretation of this much-loved modern classic.
When selecting this Lent term’s play, Mr Garrity was keen to challenge pupils both creatively and technically. Having previously explored farce in the 2024 production of Clue, he chose One Man, Two Guv’nors for its demanding comic style, which requires precise timing, physical agility and strong ensemble performance. The play also breaks the fourth wall, encouraging performers to engage directly with the audience and embrace the spontaneity of live comedy.
The story follows Francis Henshall, a down-on-his-luck musician who finds himself working for two employers at once, each unaware of the other’s existence. Set in Brighton and filled with mistaken identities, unexpected twists and relentless humour, the plot unfolds at breakneck pace as Francis attempts to keep his two guv’nors apart while pursuing the promise of food, fortune and romance.
To provide as much opportunity to perform as possible, there are two casts performing on alternate nights. Lower Sixth Drama Scholar Oliver Jukes, who plays Charlie “The Duck” Clench in the ‘Lennon Cast’, reflected on the experience, saying: “It’s been really fun and challenging as it is far from anything I have done before. I have really enjoyed working with this talented cast and getting to know everyone at rehearsals while also enjoying the comedy and chaotic aspects of the play.”
Cooper Collins, also performing as Charlie “The Duck” Clench in the ‘McCartney Cast’, added: “I’ve really loved the challenge of getting to grips with the character because it’s quite different to anything I’ve done in the past. I also love the fast-paced comedy of the play, and I hope audiences will too.”
Nell Nicholls, a Lower Sixth pupil playing Pauline in the ‘Lennon Cast’, shared her enthusiasm, saying: “I am really excited for this performance as I have enjoyed getting to know a variety of people and working together throughout rehearsals.”
Eva Davies, in Year Ten and performing as Pauline in the ‘McCartney Cast’, commented:
“I’ve really enjoyed meeting new people and working together on the show, and I hope everyone enjoys watching it.”
After months of rehearsals, the cast and crew are now looking forward to welcoming audiences across four performances. The ‘Lennon Cast’ will perform on Monday 16 March and Thursday 19 March, while the ‘McCartney Cast’ will take to the stage on Wednesday 18 March and Friday 20 March.
