A Remarkable Term of RGS Sporting Achievement
The Michaelmas term has been an exceptional one for sport at RGS Worcester, with pupils achieving outstanding success across a remarkable breadth of disciplines. From national cup victories and international representation to unbeaten teams and derby wins, this term has demonstrated the depth of talent, commitment and team spirit within the RGS sporting community.
Hockey
Girls’ Hockey continues to flourish, with the 1st XI enjoying a strong term. Their victory over King’s School in the National Cup was a standout result, followed by an impressive performance under the lights at the Severn Shield match, played in front of more than 700 spectators at our Hockey Centre. With 23 fixtures played and a superb 74% win rate, the squad has led from the front.
The younger age groups also excelled. The Under 12A team remains unbeaten, while the Under 13A side recorded outstanding wins over King’s Worcester and Loughborough Schools in the ISHL Plate. Indoors, the 1st team was the only school in Worcestershire to qualify for the Regional Finals, another significant achievement.
Rugby
Rugby has delivered some of the most memorable moments of the term, headlined by the 1st XV’s dramatic 21–20 victory in the Modus Challenge Cup match, showcasing tremendous RGS determination, resilience and teamwork on a thrilling night at Sixways Stadium.
Across the season, the 1st XV has played 11 fixtures, winning an impressive 73% against strong opposition. Success was equally shown in the younger years: the Under 14A team completed an unbeaten season and progressed to the fourth round of the National Cup, while the Under 15B team extended their extraordinary record remaining unbeaten for the fourth consecutive year, scoring nearly 400 points and conceding only six tries.
Rowing
It has been a landmark term for RGS Rowing. The squad trained in France over Half term and competed across several regattas, culminating in an excellent showing at the British Indoor Rowing Championships, with 25 athletes taking part and securing four Top 10 national finishes.
Former RGS pupils also shone on the world stage. Liv Hodgson competed at both the European and World Under 19 Beach Sprints Championships, finishing 8th in the Mixed Double at both events despite an equipment issue in the knockout stage. Lucy Whiteley achieved an exceptional 4th place in the Women’s Under 19 World Championships, narrowly missing a podium finish by just one second.
Football
RGS Football enjoyed further success this term, with Senior players embarking on an exciting Tour to Italy and Germany. The 1st XI has been in excellent form, winning 78% of their nine fixtures. Congratulations also go to Max Pearce (Year Ten), who was invited to train with the England FA Under 15 group.
Girls’ Football continues to thrive, with the Under 13A team progressing confidently through the Worcester Schools FA Cup, winning their most recent match 10-0.
Netball
The 1st VII has shown impressive consistency, playing 15 matches and securing a 73% win rate, including two victories over King’s School Worcester. Their performances have earned them qualification for the Regional tournament next term. The Under 14 team has also enjoyed a superb run and will compete in the Quarter Finals of the national Sisters ‘n Sport Cup.
These achievements highlight the breadth of sporting opportunities at RGS Worcester and the dedication of both pupils and staff. We eagerly anticipate building on this success in the Lent term.
