A Night of Exceptional Hockey at the Severn Shield Fixture
A thrilling evening of Hockey unfolded on Tuesday night at the Worcester International Hockey Centre as the RGS Worcester and King’s School 1st XI and 2nd XI teams went head-to-head in the annual Severn Shield fixture. More than 700 spectators from both Schools gathered to watch the matches in what has become a much-anticipated highlight of the sporting calendar.
The 2nd XI match opened proceedings, with both sides displaying impressive skill and defensive resilience, resulting in a hard-fought 0–0 draw. Following the medal presentation, anticipation built for the main event as the 1st XI teams took to the pitch.
The first half saw a spirited and evenly matched contest, with neither side managing to break the deadlock before half-time. In the second half, King’s took the lead following a penalty corner. RGS Captain Fynn levelled the score at 1–1 with a well-taken penalty flick, igniting the home crowd. Despite dominating territory and pressure and with King’s temporarily reduced to ten players, the decisive second goal remained elusive. In the final moments of the match, a penalty corner was awarded to King’s after their Captain challenged an umpire’s call. The whistle went for the end of the game, but the penalty corner still stood and the King’s Captain found the net to seal a 2–1 victory.
Both teams showcased exceptional determination and teamwork, thrilling the crowd right up to the final whistle.
Following the match, the two Headmasters presented medals to the two teams and RGS Headmaster, Mr John Pitt, thanked the players, coaches, officials and supporters before presenting the Severn Shield trophy.
RGS Hockey Captain Fynn Butler reflected: “Despite the result, I am incredibly proud of the way the team performed on Tuesday; we truly rose to the occasion. Although the match didn’t go our way this year, I couldn’t be more excited to see how our cup run unfolds this season, and I am extremely grateful for the experience this game has given us. A huge thank-you to everyone who came to support; if anything, this year has only strengthened our determination to come back even stronger next year.”
RGS Worcester’s Head of Hockey, Miss Sally Walton OLY, said: “The Severn Shield is always a special occasion, and I could not be prouder of how our pupils rose to the challenge. From the first whistle they showed composure, teamwork and belief, executing their game plan with maturity. Although the result didn’t go our way, the performance and the atmosphere under the lights were outstanding a true celebration of school sport.”
After the match an RGS parent wrote to the Headmaster, “I just wanted to congratulate you and your team for the manner in which you presented tonight’s event in such a professional manner. Whilst I recognise the result of the match was not what we all wanted, I would ask you to pass on our thanks to everyone who helped stage the event. It showcased RGS in such a great way.”
While King’s lifted the Severn Shield on this occasion, RGS Worcester can take great pride in their performance and recent success, having secured victory over King’s in the earlier Cup fixture to progress to the next round of the national competition.
