RGS Debaters Through to the Next Round
On Monday 27 November, three RGS debaters competed in Round One of the ESU Schools’ Mace Competition. There were three debates across the night, with only three schools progressing to the next round. Joseph Kington, Hannah Agoston and Orla Hession-Wilson proposed the motion:
‘This House Believes that environmental campaigning should focus on changing government policy rather than individual behaviours’
They faced strong opposition from numerous local schools but qualified comfortably for the next round. Joseph opened the debate with a confident and measured speech, convincingly introducing the case for the proposition. Hannah spoke second and was commended for her engagement with the other team, rebutting their arguments assuredly and offering challenging ‘points of information’. Orla performed the role of ‘summariser’, addressing difficult questions from the floor and convincing the judge that RGS had won the debate.
Joseph, Hannah and Orla were commended for their teamwork, listening skills and analysis and deservedly progressed to the next round.
