RGS Debaters: feared across the Midlands!
Having already qualified a record-equalling number of teams for the Cambridge Union Schools Debating Competition Finals as well as making it into the Regional Final of the English-Speaking Union’s Schools’ Mace last week, this week RGS Worcester debaters also secured another record, equalling best tally at the Oxford Schools’ competition Regional Round.
The Midlands round of the Oxford University Schools’ competition is always incredibly competitive with RGS up against all of our local rivals such as Bromsgrove School, Solihull School and Trent College. At 4.30pm on Tuesday evening, the teams across the Midlands joined online for two rounds of debating on Zoom. Both motions were challenging: the first that ‘This House regrets the culture of outrage’ and the second was ‘This House believes that the media should not report on the private lives of politicians’.
By 9.45pm, the results were in and RGS Worcester had taken three of the six places available for Oxford Finals’ Day in March! Congratulations to qualifiers, Max Houchin and Ella Marsay-Jones in the Upper Sixth. They will be joined on Finals Day by the Lower Sixth pairs, Elizabeth McCabe and James Preece and Katy Marsh and Kasia Czyrko – the same pairs who have also made it to Cambridge Finals Day!
This is an exceptional achievement by the RGS Debating Society and by the Lower Sixth Debaters in particular, especially considering that Kasia and Katy reached the Birmingham Schools and Warwick Schools Finals last term.
