Lower Sixth University Adventures and Next Steps in Careers Planning
We have begun our preparation with the Lower Sixth students for life beyond RGS. Last week students were offered the opportunity to go on a visit to their choice of one of three Universities to help with their Careers planning.
Students could choose to visit Aston, Nottingham or Birmingham Universities. Each trip offered a campus tour and talks on how to choose a University and a Degree course. There were opportunities to engage with Student Ambassadors and learn tips and advice for their next steps and making decisions about choosing higher education.
Students attending Aston University joined a Business Taster day. Aston is Triple Crown accredited, and one of the UK’s leading Business Schools for support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and helped to launch the national Help to Grow: Management programme. One of their Alumni spoke to students about being an entrepreneur.
Students on the Birmingham trip experienced a Taster lecture in Politics. Feedback from students highlighted that they enjoyed seeing the facilities, visiting a campus, talking to students and seeing how lectures actually work. The Lower Sixth students said, “The lecture was interesting to get an insight into how lessons worked” and “I particularly found the talk from the students at the end of the session the most interesting as I found that they discussed aspects of University life and what to consider when applying to a University that I would have never have thought of otherwise.”
It is hoped that these trips provided the opportunity for students to experience a University first hand and consider the variety of Degrees on offer at this stage in their Careers planning. They have plenty of time to make decisions and the visits should have encouraged them to get thinking and researching.
Next week Lower Sixth students have their ‘Next Steps Day’ when we look at each pathway in greater detail. We will be joined by alumni who pass on their wisdom about Degree Apprenticeships and Gap Year activities. A representative from the London Interdisciplinary School will be speaking with students about the interdisciplinary approach. We look forward to supporting each of the students as they explore further and then start to consider their options and make their choices.
