Hollie To Help Deliver The Commonwealth Games 2022
We were delighted to hear from RGS Worcester alumna, Hollie Lunn who is working as a ‘Games Delivery Coordinator’ for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games is extra special for Hollie as it is a ‘home’ Games, with the events being held in venues across Birmingham and the West Midlands.
Hollie explains, “This Games will also be particularly special as it will be the first time Women’s Cricket T20 and Basketball/ Wheelchair Basketball 3×3 will be taking place. We are planning for the Games as normal, so hopefully many people will be able to participate or spectate next year!”
During her time at RGS, Hollie always showed a keen interest in Sport and was part of the RGS Hockey, Netball Athletics and Rounders teams. Hollie adds, “I have many happy memories of RGS and most of them include sport! I think the best memory for me was winning the Superbowl in Year 13 (2016). I just remember running straight up to my best friend Laura when the buzzer went off at the end, and realising that all those years of training and hard work had been worth it!”
Whilst studying for a degree in International Hospitality Management at the University of Surrey, Hollie found she was particularly interested in the Events side of her course, and gained a position as a ‘Event Operations Intern’ for Commonwealth Games England during her placement year. This gave Hollie valuable work experience and exciting opportunities, including working at the School Games 2018 and Netball World Cup 2019.
For pupils interested in pursuing a career in sports events, Hollie offers the following, “The advice that I would give, is to take every opportunity possible. One of the main things that I have discovered from working in sports events, is that experience really is the best way to learn. There are lots of volunteer positions for each event which are vastly recognised, and there will be plenty of volunteer roles for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 that I highly recommend getting involved with – you can apply on the B2022 website!”
RGS Worcester is hoping to play our part in preparations for the Commonwealth Games and we have offered our new International Hockey Centre as a training venue for an international team. We wait to hear whether our offer will be accepted which will be a fantastic opportunity for our pupils and Worcester Hockey Club members to see, and hopefully meet, international Hockey players.
With her passion for sport and a degree in International Hospitality Management from the University of Surrey, Hollie’s role for the Commonwealth Games really does seem a perfect fit. We wish her every success for the future.
