A Showcase of Artistic Talent at Worcester Cathedral
Talented RGS Lower Sixth artists were given the opportunity to exhibit their ‘City Life’ Exhibition in the historic Chapter House of Worcester Cathedral over the recent Half term holiday. From Saturday 10 February to Monday,19 February members of the public visited the Exhibition which was inspired by the people and places of Worcester.
The Chapter House, dating back to about 1100, stands as a testament to architectural heritage, being the earliest circular or polygonal chapter house in the country. Against this backdrop of history and tradition, our students showcased their talent and creativity, paying homage to the vibrant life of Worcester.
The journey to assemble this Exhibition began with a walking trip around Worcester last term for the pupils, culminating in a visit to the City’s awe-inspiring Cathedral. Armed with cameras and sketchbooks, our students captured the essence of Worcester through photographs and observational drawings, which they skilfully transformed into finished pieces of artwork which were then put on display in the Exhibition.
Under the guidance of Head of Art, Mrs Jo Hunt, the students meticulously crafted a diverse array of artwork employing various media. From expressive drawings to mixed media and oil paintings, each piece offered a unique perspective, collectively weaving a rich tapestry of Worcester’s city life.
The Exhibition garnered praise from many visitors, with comments reflecting admiration for the maturity and professionalism exhibited by the Sixth Form students. One visitor from the design industry remarked, “You must be so proud of your Art Department and the students who must have worked so hard to realise such a professional and enjoyable exhibition.”
A sense of pride resonated amongst attendees, with one visitor expressing, “It made me proud to be a part of the city.”
Headmaster, Mr John Pitt commented, “I am immensely proud of our Art Department and the talent and dedication of our students. Many congratulations to all involved in bringing this Exhibition to the Cathedral. From the students who poured their creativity and passion into their artwork, to the staff who guided and inspired them along the way and committed so much time to transport and present the work so beautifully. It is always a brave thing to do to display your work to the public, but the students should be proud and pleased with the outcome. The comments by visitors have been so positive and the artwork has clearly had an impact.”
Our grateful thanks must go to the Dean and Chapter of Worcester Cathedral for providing us with the opportunity to share our students’ talents with the wider community. Together, we have created a memorable showcase that celebrates the beauty and diversity of Worcester, leaving a lasting impression upon all who attended.
