A New Concert Takes Centre Stage
On Friday 29 September, Main Hall hosted RGS Worcester’s latest musical performance platform: ‘RGS Live!’ This new concert put contemporary music centre stage, with keen audience members sitting around tables with drinks and snacks to enjoy an evening of very high-quality Rock and Pop.
Thirty-two performers, with representatives from each Year group, raised the roof with music ranging from The Beatles to Adele and Olivia Rodrigo, interspersed with songs by Avril Lavigne, Billy Joel, the Foo Fighters and the Arctic Monkeys. School ensembles, including the ever-growing Guitar Group and the Years Eight and Nine Rock Band, performed alongside pupil-run bands ‘Halcyon’ and ‘Akt-II’. Three brave Year Seven pupils sang or played drum solos just four weeks after joining RGS, all cheered on and playing alongside supportive and talented Year Eleven and Sixth Form students.
Roshan Wijesinghe, a Year Seven pupil who played drums, said: “At first, I was very nervous but as soon as I stepped on the stage all my worries went away. I found performing really fun and nerve-racking all at once; I came off the stage feeling amazing!”
Lilah Morgan, Year Eight, who sang ‘Fix You’ by Coldplay, said “I found the whole experience absolutely brilliant. Performing for the first time with a live band was so exciting and I loved cheering on my friends, who were all amazing. I would love the opportunity to perform in a live rock/pop concert again!”
Theo Mason, a Music Scholar who has just joined the School in the Lower Sixth and who played alto sax in three songs, said: ‘This concert was my first at RGS and I was astounded by the friendliness and family-like feel between both the pupils and between the performers and audience. It was great to be a part of and it was heart-warming to support younger pupils and see them flourish”.
The whole evening, ably and generously facilitated by the School’s Catering and Facilities teams, was a celebration of support and musical success here at RGS. Thank you to Mr Soman, Director of Music, and Mr Melaard, our Performing Arts Gap Year Assistant, who supported and encouraged the performers. One teacher who attended said, “It was absolutely fabulous and the best Friday night I have had in a while.”
We look forward to more ‘RGS Live!’ events in the future and congratulate all of those involved for their impressive performances.
