Drama, Performance & Adventure in Cornwall
The Upper Sixth Drama trip has always been an iconic event which all A Level Drama students look forward to, and this year’s group definitely made it iconic! We set off on our journey, enjoying a couple of sing-alongs and some fun bus games along the way. We stopped off at the services, took a group photo and grabbed some McDonald’s breakfast for our travels!
We pushed on and arrived at our first stop, Porthcurno Beach. We stretched our legs after the long journey and dipped our toes in the sand, before splitting into groups for some ‘Lysistrata’ action. Despite having the public as our audience, we performed some compelling group pieces, working on physicality and Greek theatrical conventions. Then we had some well-earned time paddling in the sea, where we took lots of fun photos and videos before setting off for the YHA in Penzance.
We rested in our dorms until dinner time, then set off for the Minack Theatre for an amazing evening of opera. We admired the beautiful scenery and settled into our seats ready for the show. We watched the sun set across the skyline and saw the Minack Theatre turn from day to night alongside a performance of ‘Don Pasquale’. We returned to our dorms, after an opera-filled journey back to the hostel, and rested until the next morning.
After a lovely hot breakfast, we travelled to Charlestown. The docks were beautiful and we continued to work on our ‘Lysistrata’ text study, performing duologues across the dock! We then explored Charlestown before getting back on the minibus and travelling to Truro.
In Truro, we explored the markets before taking our seats inside Hall for Cornwall to watch ‘The Choir of Man’. We were amazed by the stage, which had been transformed into a fully functioning bar, and members of the audience were welcomed up to explore the set and meet the actors before the show started. The show was a jukebox musical and our group had so much fun singing along and dancing. We were even invited up on stage during the interval, where we pulled out our best moves and danced alongside the cast!
We returned to the youth hostel and had a discussion about the performance, before relaxing and playing Dobble in the community room. The next morning, we said goodbye to the Penzance YHA and set off back to Worcester, stopping at Jamaica Inn along the way.
The trip was a lovely way to begin our final year in the Drama Department and gave us plenty of memories to take with us as we embark on our last year at RGS.
