RGS Heads Make a Splash
On Sunday, members of the RGS Worcester Rowing community gathered at Pullinger Boat Club for a very special Boat Naming Ceremony, celebrating two new additions to the School’s fleet. The event marked another memorable moment for RGS Rowing and paid tribute to two individuals who have made a lasting and meaningful contribution to The RGS Worcester Family of Schools.
In fine summer weather, surrounded by pupils, parents, staff and friends of the School, the ceremony saw two boats named Laura Brown, after the Headmistress of RGS Springfield, and Gareth Hughes, after the Headmaster of RGS The Grange.
Both Laura and Gareth have played influential roles in shaping the early educational journeys of countless RGS pupils, encouraging the values of kindness, perseverance and ambition that are reflected both in the classroom and on the water. It was a proud and poignant occasion, recognising their leadership and longstanding service to the RGS community.
The ceremony was led by Mr John Pitt, Executive Head of The RGS Worcester Family of Schools, who shared heartfelt thanks and reflections with all those present. In his address, he praised the commitment of RGS rowers who train “week in, week out”, acknowledged the unwavering support of parents, and expressed deep gratitude to Head of Rowing, Mr Tim Messent and the Rowing coaching team, whose dedication behind the scenes enables pupils to thrive in the sport.
Turning to the honourees, Mr Pitt described Laura Brown as “a passionate educator who really believes in encouraging young people to be the best they can be.” He highlighted her 13 years of energetic and inspiring leadership at RGS Springfield, her love for the outdoors, and her all-in attitude: “Laura never does anything by halves, she throws herself at everything with full energy and enthusiasm. So, I imagine this boat, once named, will go at a great pace and take some beating!”
Introducing Gareth Hughes, Mr Pitt noted his nearly 30-year association with RGS, including 16 years as Headmaster of RGS The Grange. He spoke warmly of Gareth’s deep roots in sport, referencing his time as a professional rugby player for Saracens and his earlier role as Master in charge of Rugby at RGS Worcester. “Gareth’s boat”, he added with a smile, “will be for those pupils with grit, determination and flair – with plenty of kindness and support, too, but perhaps only after crossing the finish line!”
Following Mr Pitt’s address, guests watched as the boats were formally named with the traditional celebratory splash of (non-alcoholic) champagne. Pupils then took to the river in a commemorative ‘row past’, proudly rowing the newly named boats ‘Laura Brown’ and ‘Gareth Hughes’ along the River Severn.
The staff thanked the pupils and especially those from the Upper Sixth who have finished at RGS and still gave up their time for this special event.
The afternoon continued with refreshments and an opportunity for the wider School community to come together and mark this significant milestone for RGS Rowing. As the two new boats set off on their journey, they carry with them the names and legacies of two remarkable leaders who have guided generations of RGS pupils, both on land and now, symbolically, on the water.
