Honouring Mrs Sturdy and Our Charitable Efforts
We are delighted to share that Pastoral Secretary, Mrs Margaret Sturdy, has received a special award from the charity Wooden Spoon in recognition of her extraordinary personal fundraising efforts. Wooden Spoon is Rugby’s charity, supporting disadvantaged children and young people through funding sensory rooms, outdoor playgrounds, specialist medical equipment and initiatives to improve health and wellbeing. All money raised in Worcestershire is spent locally, and RGS is proud to support the charity through the annual Modus Challenge Cup fixture.
Margaret has been raising funds for Wooden Spoon for many years and was recently presented with her own commemorative ‘Wooden Spoon’ after raising over £10,000. Margaret said, “I have raised funds for this charity for many years and was recently presented with my own ‘Wooden Spoon’ for raising over £10,000 myself. I have organised coach trips to London and other cities in England and Wales, sold hundreds of plants and once did a sponsored 32-ton JCB drive, something I think my instructor will never forget!”
Alongside her personal fundraising, Margaret plays a central role in leading the School’s charitable work, co-ordinating all fundraising with Mrs Noble and the Charity Committee. Their efforts this year have helped raise a total of £15,647.51 across the RGS Worcester community. Highlights include £2,312 raised by the Sixth Form for The Myriad Centre, and bucket collections at the Modus Challenge Cup and Superball events, which supported Maggs Day Centre and St Richard’s Hospice. A Non-Uniform Day and Staff vs Sixth Form Netball match raised over £2,300 for Comic Relief. One Year Seven pupil raised over £1,000 for Acorns Children’s Hospice, and £900 was raised for Worcester Snoezelen through an Easter Raffle. The Drama Department’s performance of Teechers raised £1,536.30, supporting Young Epilepsy, Betel UK and Diabetes UK. The School’s ongoing support for Worcester Food Bank continues to make a difference throughout the year.
A huge thank you to everyone who has contributed or supported our fundraising efforts, and a special thank you to Mrs Noble, the Charity Committee and to Mrs Sturdy for their tireless enthusiasm and dedication.
