A Night of Debate and Distinction
On Thursday, the Senior Debating Society held its annual black tie dinner in Main Hall. Dr Chris Monaghan, Principal Law lecturer at the University of Worcester was our guest speaker at a fabulous evening, attended by over 40 debaters.
Opening with a drinks reception at 7pm, the debaters enjoyed a three-course meal in the beautiful environs of Main Hall, suitably decorated with flowers and lights for the evening. Chris Monaghan then addressed the debaters, discussing the nature of the UK’s constitution as well as some of the arguments around whether the UK should have written constitution. He also talked about the importance of confidence, resilience and humility when facing challenges in a law – or any future – career.
After this inspirational and thought-provoking talk, the outgoing co-Presidents of the Society, Annabelle Howarth and K McCabe, shared their memories of debating at RGS Worcester, looking back to their early days in Year Seven and Eight. We also celebrated the successes of the Society in 2024-25, notably qualifying two pairs to Oxford Finals Day as well as the victory of Isabelle Jones and Joseph Kington to be become the champions at Nottingham Schools. The evening ended with toasts from the members of the Society.
With the Upper Sixth now moving on, the torch has been passed to the Year Eleven and Lower Sixth. Based on their success and enthusiasm this year, this would appear to be in safe hands.
