RGS Worcester Champions Local Rugby Development
As the Official Education Partner of Worcester Warriors, RGS Worcester continues to champion Rugby development across the region. Over the past two weeks, we were delighted to welcome more than 150 pupils from Years Seven, Eight, and Nine from local schools for two exciting Rugby events.
The first event, a Year Seven Rugby Tournament, took place on Tuesday 18 November and was delivered by RGS Worcester’s Sports and Partnership staff in collaboration with Worcester Rugby Football Club, who kindly hosted the day. The tournament focused on introducing Year Seven pupils to game play and developing core skills. Participating schools included: Tudor Grange Academy, Christopher Whitehead Language College, Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College, The Chantry School, and Bishop Perowne CofE College.
This was followed by a Skills Development Morning on Thursday 27 November at Flagge Meadow. Pupils from Tudor Grange Academy, Nunnery Wood High School, Christopher Whitehead Language College, Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College, The Chantry School, and Bishop Perowne CofE College attended the session, which aimed to build confidence and inspire a long-term enjoyment of the game.
Both events began with a dynamic warm-up before pupils took part in expert coaching sessions led by RGS Worcester Rugby staff. Training focused on core techniques such as handling, evasion, tackling, and decision-making under pressure. Pupils then put these skills into practice during closely contested round-robin fixtures.
RGS staff officiated throughout, placing a strong emphasis on enjoyment, teamwork and sportsmanship. Each event concluded with medals and certificates awarded to the winning teams, while all participants received certificates in recognition of their excellent efforts.
These events strengthened community connections and provided valuable competitive opportunities for local secondary school teams that often have limited Rugby fixtures.
Head of Rugby, Mr Rob Lewis, commented: “Rugby is such an important part of the fabric here at RGS Worcester and we are delighted to be able to extend these opportunities to pupils across the County. Our partnership with Worcester Warriors and local Rugby clubs gives us a brilliant platform to help grow the sport locally and ensure more young people can benefit from the values that Rugby instils.”
These events demonstrate our ongoing commitment to Outreach and Partnerships within the wider Worcester community. We look forward to hosting our Under 16 Sevens event next term.
