Pupils Gain First-Hand Insight into Automotive Engineering at JLR
RGS pupils were treated to a fascinating Careers Seminar before Half term, led by RGS alumnus and parent Mr James Bishop, who has spent 30 years at Jaguar Land Rover and now serves as Head of Aerodynamics. Mr Bishop offered an engaging insight into how JLR designs and tests its vehicles, from aerodynamic efficiency and high-speed stability to the wind noise and dirt management that shape everyday driving.
His role involves leading a team of more than fifty engineers responsible for ensuring every new Jaguar and Land Rover performs as intended in the real world. Pupils were shown how designs move from computer simulation to wind tunnel testing and then to final sign-off, with examples from the newly developed Defender OCTA, the most extreme Defender produced to date.
Mr Bishop also reflected on his journey from RGS Worcester to JLR, explaining how a love of Maths, Physics and DT, combined with CCF RAF, inspired him to study Aeronautical Engineering at Bristol University. Originally aiming to design aircraft, he instead joined Jaguar as a graduate and was responsible for aerodynamic development on production vehicles.
He encouraged pupils to make the most of the opportunities available at RGS, emphasising that strong qualifications alone are not enough; communication skills, confidence and experiences outside the classroom are equally important. Mr Bishop outlined the different pathways into JLR, including apprenticeships, industrial placements and graduate roles and advised pupils to explore the careers information available online.
We are grateful to Mr Bishop for returning to RGS Worcester and for demonstrating how passion and perseverance can lead to a rewarding and innovative career!
